At a 400 kV switching substation serving a mix of legacy electromechanical relays and a new IEC 61850 bay controller installation, the engineering team had deployed separate NTP and PTP references on two independent servers. The two sources drifted by up to 3 milliseconds during periods of cloud cover affecting the primary NTP server antenna. Disturbance records from the IEC 61850 IEDs and the legacy IRIG-B-fed relays could not be reconciled without manually correcting the timestamp offset on every event.
We replaced both servers with a single PreciseSync-GMC-300 for the IEC 61850 process bus and a PreciseSync-SMC-300 on the station NTP network, both fed by the same active GNSS antenna and deriving from the same UTC reference. Within two hours every IED, relay and SCADA client on site was within 100 nanoseconds of UTC. The manual timestamp correction step was eliminated from the PEA workflow.
The first protection event after commissioning produced a single, continuous, time-aligned sequence of records across both the IEC 61850 IEDs and the legacy relays. The investigation that would previously have taken three days closed in one shift. That is what a shared GNSS reference across both protocols delivers in practice.
