RS-485 Isolator

The RS-485 Isolator from Sertel Electronics is a galvanically isolated signal module intended to keep communication alive for SCADA, PLC, and String Monitoring Card (SMC) systems. It safeguards the bus against downstream faults, surges, and ground loops. Model T-485-ISO-300 contains a DC-to-DC converter that delivers 3,750 V rms of power and provides signal isolation between the input and output. This guarantees that field-side electronics are not electrically linked to the SCADA side. This arrangement lets the serial link keep reporting data and avoids damage to upstream equipment when downstream failures happen.

3,750 V rms power and signal isolation, 5,000 V rms at board level
Hot-swap capable: live insertion and removal with zero system downtime
Up to 32 nodes on a single RS-485 bus, 1,200 m cable length per side
24 V DC operation, drawing less than 1 W

Capabilities

Built to Keep RS-485 Networks Running

Six ways the RS-485 Isolator T-485-ISO-300 keeps SCADA, PLC, and building management communication protected, continuous, and easy to maintain.

Galvanic Isolation Barrier

An integrated DC-to-DC converter separates power and signal lines, holding 3,750 V rms across the input and output circuits and 5,000 V rms at board level, so the SCADA side is never electrically tied to the field side.

Surge and Transient Protection

Voltage surges, transient spikes, and short circuits arriving on the RS-485 line are absorbed at the isolation barrier before they can reach connected SCADA or PLC equipment.

Ground Loop Elimination

Breaking the direct electrical path between devices prevents ground loop formation, one of the more common causes of noisy or intermittent RS-485 communication over long cable runs.

Multi-Device Networking

Supports safe multi-drop networking with up to 32 nodes on a single RS-485 bus, so additional SCADA, PLC, or String Monitoring Card (SMC) devices can join a segment without compromising isolation.

Hot-Swap Capability

The unit can be inserted or removed live, without disrupting active network communication, so maintenance and device replacement happen with zero system downtime.

Long-Range Serial Link

Rated for cable runs of up to 1,200 metres on either side at speeds up to 38,400 bps, running the RS-485 to RS-485 IEC 60870-5-101 protocol for dependable long-distance serial links.

Applications

Where the RS-485 Isolator Is Deployed

Wherever a SCADA master and field devices share a serial bus, the RS-485 Isolator keeps upstream systems protected from downstream electrical faults.

Industrial automation and PLC communication
Building management systems
Energy monitoring and energy manufacturing
Transportation and rail signalling
Sensor networks and distributed I/O
Battery management systems
SCADA remote I/O
